A Plan! (a canal... panama?)

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 5:12 PM
I went to the Fancy Fabric Store near my parents' house today, since they had a sale on. I found maybe two wools that I liked, one of which I"m pretty sure had a bit of spandex in it (a pumpkin coloured gab), and the other was just too expensive ($30/yard, on sale).

My Main problem, I realized, was that I still don't have a sense of the proper fabrics for 18th century. Herm, I thought. How can I fix this when shopping? And then came The Plan (sans canal). I'm going to take pictures of various fabrics in my various costuming books, and download images from the internet. Then I'll put them in an album (or two) in iPhoto - because that can transfer to my iPhone, which I carry everywhere! Instant fabric pattern visual reference library.

This opens up soo many possibilities....

PSA: Book

My mother today located in the Bargain Books section of B&N Fashion: A History from the 18th to the 20th Century. It appears to be a 2006 reprint of this book. It was $20.

Teaching?

  • Nov. 25th, 2009 at 8:17 PM
So, the next Atlantian University is in my immediate area. Of course I'll help out with the event, but I plan to teach at least one class. At the suggestion of a friend, I am going to teach "Basic SCA Etiquette" - I cover how to recognize coronets, what Oyez means, and how to behave in Court. If anyone has a suggestion for an eye-catching name for that class (I'm thinking "What Do You Do, Dear? An Introduction to SCA Etiquette")...

But I was wondering if I should teach another class, and I thought I'd see if y'all who know me thought there was something I could probably talk about for 45 minutes. Something you'd like to see me teach (keep it clean, people)?

Henryisms

  • Nov. 25th, 2009 at 7:17 PM
"Daddy! No! Don't play with us! We're playing together!" (We've apparently been rendered obsolete)

"Let's play ancient Egypt! Edward, you lay on the floor and I'll build a [pillow] pyramid on you. You're the pharoh, and now you're undead. Mom! Come be the Egyptologist and find him!"

"Mom, I love you more than Mac -n- Cheese."

And lest you fear too much sweet, don't worry. Henry also mooned Edward and said "Look at my butt!" (And got sent to the bench...)

History is fun

For the next three days we are headed down to Williamsburg to volunteer at Jamestown Settlement for their Foods and Feasts event. We'll definitely be there Thursday and Friday, but Saturday is up in the air. Thankfully the weather report is dry and positive.

Then on December 10th we are headed up to Plimoth for the Jacket's Grand Reveal. The invitations are gorgeous, I gasped when I first opened the envelope from the mail, and I can't wait for the party. It will be nice to see some of the hard workers again, in addition to the Vega showgirl sparkly glory that is the jacket. No flash photography is allowed, but I'll see if I can get permission and my camera to take some pictures, and maybe even a short video of the jacket in motion.

I also finally got more tokens for fundraising. I'm sorry I missed some folks at Holiday Faire for sales. If you want a cast bird or butterfly for the holidays, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Thank you to everyone who have been so supportive already.

easier?

  • Nov. 25th, 2009 at 2:43 PM
Sometimes you gotta wonder at new technology making our lives "easier." Really, it is just the adaptation to the new piece. The iPhone has made my world a ton easier in many ways since getting it. But moving over to my new laptop has proven a bit of a pain.

Download iTunes, sync phone, can't sync apps as will overwrite the ones on my phone with nothing. Bug Alan. He remembers you have to authorize the new computer to sync with iPhone. Authorize. Still having problem with apps. Ah, apps won't come off phone onto PC, you have to re-download them to the new machine (free of charge, but still!) and then go from there. I couldn't find a quick button that let me go into my purchase history to redownload just those apps. argh!

Okay, I finally get my iPhone working with the new machine okay, so I go to transfer my old files to the new machine. No problem. Go to import bookmarks. Argh! I know I exported those bookmarks, where is that file?!?! Dammit. Give up and eat soup.

Not to mention the insane Windows Update install stall that occurred overnight after purchase that locked it up for what seemed like a day. blech. And I think it was doing another update last night that locked me out showing there was power but nothing loaded to the screen. Windows 7 was supposed to be easier. Need to look into some settings and maybe un-automate some stuff. Wait, was that set to automatically update at 7pm? What a stupid time, I need to change that. sigh.

Easier? Not yet, but hopefully soon.

At least it has been distracting me from embroidering/sewing, which I'm not sure is a good thing anymore... At least the laundry is done.

PS: the Moroccan meatball and squash soup was very good, and we have leftovers. yum! All thanks to Chris, our non-Frances long term guest.

Although Ladybug was very distressed and confused at the prolonged activity in the kitchen. What is he doing and what are those smells?!?

Gavin

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 10:45 PM

Lots of ups and downs for Gavin in the past couple of months. Job upheavals, nursing his dying car, which finally croaked on Halloween. This was followed by the two week search for new (used) wheels along with the carting around and loaning of vehicles in between, ending in the title, tax, tags and registration dance at the finish line, all of which has bled our finances white. So we've had cut back and have cranked down the social calendar a bit.

The upside, he has his own wheels, he's staying on top of his classes, his financial aid came through, and he's been hired as an instructor at L.A. Boxing. Also......... he's been accepted at UNC and a reasonable number of his credits will transfer. When this was announced to the UNC student body, of course, pandemonium ensued.

Today he posted this on my wall: Awwwwww.

Free Websites!

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 10:15 PM
It occurred to me that there are probably plenty of artisans out there who don't have websites to showcase their work. I know not everybody likes to brag, but just showing what you're working on might help somebody else with what they're working on.

I know a lot of people use LJ for a personal journal and for dress diaries, but I thought it might be fun to explore how to set up what looks like a more traditional website than a blog. I've been playing with the idea of transitioning my own website into a wordpress blog, so as to more easily control content without having to deal with HTML, FTP, and a lot of other acronyms. But really, it's possible to do this in a format that anybody reading this is probably already familiar with, LJ.

I'm sure that none of this is news to a lot of people, but I started playing around today, and thought I'd share. Maybe it'll be useful to somebody. I don't think I'll keep the other journal all that up to date, rather, I'll likely use it more as a template or sample to share. Then again, you never know. I might break down and use a dress diary. Generally, I prefer to subject all of my readers to kid pictures along with medievalism posts. Muh hah ha... *ahem*

So, without further ado, I present How to Have a Website for No Money or Technical Skill (at Costly Thy Habit). It's created entirely using the LJ Text editor (yes I WAY prefer just using the HTML editor, but a lot of people don't know HTML) and Flickr. I did just copy a bunch of stuff over from my other site, so there are links to PDFs which, as far as I know, you can't really put on the web without a place to host them, but other than that, you can do everything there for free and without tech skills.

Hope this is useful!

Looking to the future

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 8:55 PM
Had an awesome time at Holiday Faire - got to hang out with [info]tattycat, [info]kass_rants, and [info]nq3x and talk clothes (bliss!).

My experience in borrowed boyclothes at Tournament of the Lily has me thinking more critically about the clothes I want to make to fight in. Because they're fighting clothes, and I have little to no intention of wearing the doublet and hose without a gown over, I may not bother with points in the back (which is to say, I'll put some in the middle back but not use them). Should the need arise I have a plan to use the tied-waistband trick used in women's drop-front gowns.

As most of you probably know, [info]kass_rants just debuted a line of early Tudor/early/mid Stuart gowns, including a pattern based on her research reconstructing the Katherine of Aragon gown. We talked this weekend and she agrees that the gowns the middle-class Netherlandish women are wearing is probably a version of what the royalty were wearing years earlier. I'll probably buy the pattern, because I'm a research junkie and I like taking into account as many possible methods as I can (plus, Kass has already tested it!). However, this doesn't alter my plans to make a working class tudor dress based on the patterns I already have - like I said, research junkie, plus that's instant gratification.

The major challenge for 2010 is what was supposed to have been my challenge in 2009 - 18th century. Specifically, a whole outfit. I have most of what I need, and plenty of awesome resources, I just need to buckle down and fit and sew. In order to achieve this goal, I'm going to limit the number of weekends per month I travel. Bonus is that I'll start to feel like I live in this town again (I work 30 minutes out of town and by the time I get home most of the independent stores are closed :p).

So that's the plan. Expect fabric posts with pictures and mumblings in the near future.

One good thing about FacePlant...it gives me a window into the back-and-forth between Isaac & Gavin:

Gavin: Note to self: don't do "the reject" dance in the shower. Now I know where it got its name.

Isaac: You're a goober.

Gavin: If you had clear shower curtains, you'd be showing off too. (How'd the move go?)

Two of Isaac's mixes have made it into rotation on WUTK 90.3 FM at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville: his "Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps (Bookworm dubstep remix)" which is quite different from the original ("Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeah's (music starts at 00:43), and his original piece "The Mission."
